The MCU Gets Dark with New What If…?

It may not always seem like it but the Marvel Cinematic Universe is actually a pretty cheery place. Most of the time the good guys beat the bad guys and justice is served. But what if it wasn’t? That’s the question this week’s episode of What If…?  Asks and it does so in the subtlest of ways.

It doesn’t take much to make the dominos fall and that gives you a clue at just how little is holding the current MCU together. What this episode excels at his tying together threads that were only loosely hinted at in Phase One. It’s mentioned that Iron Man 2, Incredible Hulk and Thor all take place in about a week but the audience saw them spaced out in years. This time we get to see events unfold from Nicky Fury’s perspective bringing in characters that wouldn’t even be a factor until way later in the timeline.

The show does a fantastic job of redeeming Iron Man 2, of the company’s lesser films. We also get the chance to see a retconned version of The Incredible Hulk with Mark Ruffalo taking the place of Edward Norton essentially rewriting the casting change.

Honestly, this is one episode I would LOVE to have seen as a movie. Hell, we probably still can. It’s expertly crafted and unfolds in a totally organic way while still upping the odds. I have yet to be disappointed by Marvel and that doesn’t look like it’s going to change any time soon.
