On Tuesday July 11, 2017 the highly-anticipated musical film, “Hello Again” made its Los Angeles debut at OUTFEST. Based on Michael John LaChiusa’s popular Off-Broadway musical of the same name, “Hello Again” stars Martha Plimpton, Sam Underwood, Jenna Ushkowitz, Cheyenne Jackson, Audra McDonald, T.R. Knight, Rumer Willis, Nolan Gerard Funk, Al Calderon, and Tyler Blackburn.
The film’s story can be difficult to follow, mainly because it is more of a daisy chain of ten different love affairs that take place during different time periods in the 20th century. The affairs are also not presented in chronological order. While the reasoning behind this was to display different musical styles across the different decades, it could prove to be confusing to the casual viewer.
Despite the bizarre plot, the cast is incredible, showing off their talents by belting out LaChuisa’s electrifying score all while having explicitly graphic sex. Director Tom Gustafson revealed during the post-film Q&A that all the actors sang live on set.
Ultimately, it seems that fans of LaChiusa are almost guaranteed to love the film, but those that aren’t as familiar with the work may leave the theatre more confused than moved.
