Trailer Reaction: “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”

Harry Potter fans rejoice! The Fantastic Beasts sequel is upon us! Titled, “The Crimes of Grindelwald”, the highly anticipated sequel welcomes back stars Eddie Redmayne, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterston, Allison Sudol, Ezra Miller, and Johnny Depp as the titular villain. Joining the cast this time around is Jude Law as a young Albus Dumbledore, the future headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

For me, this trailer is probably the most magical of any I’ve seen yet this year. From the very first shot we are taken back to Hogwarts, which we haven’t seen since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was released seven years ago, We see a young Dumbledore serving his role as Professor of Transfiguration (which is curious, as the scene takes place in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom). He is asked by a group of men if Scamander (Redmayne) is working for him, to which Dumbledore replies that Mr. Scamander has a knack for “not following the rules.” What follows are some scattered shots depicting a few of our old favorite creatures from Scamander’s magic suitcase, including the lovable Bowtruckle from the first film.
The trailer culminates with Dumbledore telling Newt he must face Grindelwald himself, for he cannot interfere. This no doubt is a reference to the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald, which has long been speculated as being romantic. Up until now this has only been hinted at, but one can hope this may be the first step in LGBT representation for a major film franchise.
Fantastic Beasts” opens in theaters everywhere this November.
