This weekend, DC FanDome gave an exclusive first look at a number of titles in the vastly popular DC Animated Universe. The classic story “Batman: Death in the Family” has been adapted into an all-new animated film, set to hit shelves and VOD on October 13th. What’s unique about this adaptation is that just like the 1988 comic run, fans will have the opportunity to decide the fate of Jason Todd.
“Death in the Family” was a landmark event in the comics world when in debuted in 1988. Fans were given the opportunity to call a 1-900 number to cast their vote for whether or not Jason Todd (the second Robin after Dick Grayson) would survive an assault by the Joker. The animated film follows a similar path as it contains several interactive choices that the viewer can make while watching. “I think it was Bruce Timm who said, ‘You know, one of the most famous interactive audience choice moments was around the death of Robin in the Death in the Family stories. That’s where they looped me in,” explained writer/director Brandon Vietti.
Also on hand were voice actors Vincent Martella (Jason Todd) and John DiMaggio (Joker), both reprising their roles from the 2010 animated feature “Batman: Under the Red Hood”. “I think people are going to like the places where Jason Todd is going to go. It’s very exciting and unexpected in a lot of ways,” said Martella. Vietti also advised to keep a lookout for some appearances for characters that previously appeared in Under the Red Hood. “Batman: Death in the Family” arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD October 13th.
