“Loka” is a futuristic film set in a world where superheroes and their superpowers exist. It revolves around the legend, powers, and weaknesses of an immortal Yakshi (female spirit). Such fantasy-driven stories are usually seen only in Hollywood, which is why Loka has generated huge anticipation among audiences.

Chandra, who returns to Bengaluru from abroad, lives alone in a rented house. She never goes out during the day and works only at night. Across from her house lives Sunny, a college student who falls in love with her at first sight.

Meanwhile, in the city, several people are kidnapped for human organ trafficking. Police officer Nachiyappan, who secretly supports the criminals, joins forces with them. During one such incident, when a woman officer working under him is in danger, Chandra intervenes and beats up one of the gang members — leading the group to target her next. When two goons try to abduct her, Chandra transforms into her Mohini (enchantress) form and kills them. Sunny, who witnesses this, is left shocked.

In the meantime, Nachiyappan, who gains supernatural powers similar to Chandra’s, becomes determined to destroy her. With the help of a demonic force, Chandra prepares to face him. How did Chandra acquire her superpowers? Who is she really? What happens in her battle against Nachiyappan? The rest of the story unfolds these mysteries. Kalyani’s role showcases her in a completely different dimension. Naslen’s natural performance gives stability to his character.

Sandy, Salim Kumar, and Arun Kurian have done justice to their roles. It’s an action film led by a strong female protagonist — quite refreshing in Malayalam cinema. The story starts emotionally but has its ups and downs. It is more of an emotional drama than a pure action film. The director has kept visual glamour to a minimal level, focusing instead on storytelling. The screenplay alternates between cityscapes and forest flashbacks, giving visual diversity.

Jakes Bejoy impresses with a stunning background score — especially during Chandra’s transformation scenes. Editing is neat and precise, matching the film’s pacing. Handled impressively by Little Hippo Studios and Eunoians Studio. The action sequences are visually striking and of high quality. Kalyani Priyadarshan shines in her first-ever action avatar, breaking her usual calm image. The scene where little Neeli transforms into a powerful Yakshi is mesmerizing. Sandy’s villainous role is surprising and impressive — especially considering he is known as a choreographer. Naslen’s realistic acting and his expressions of fear upon seeing the Yakshi add depth to his performance. Cameo appearances by Tovino Thomas and Dulquer Salmaan make the film more engaging.

The film’s theme resembles Dracula-style Hollywood films, making some events predictable. The reason for Chandra’s move to Bengaluru isn’t clearly explained. The character arc of Sandy is ambiguous — it’s unclear whether he’s good or bad in the beginning, and his motives could have been better defined.

This is a good movie that can be enjoyed by fans, kids, families, and action lovers alike.

A well-made film that will appeal especially to women who enjoy strong action roles.

However, those not fond of mythology or fantasy might find it slightly testing.
