With today’s historic launch of Disney+, Star Wars fans were treated to the very first episode of The Mandalorian. Set some time after Return of the Jedi, The Mandalorian tells the story of an unnamed lone bounty hunter given the task of hunting down a target with a very high price.
Pedro Pascal stars as the titular character, who’s demeanor and mannerisms reflect that of an old school loner cowboy. Whether or not this will change over the course of the series remains to be seen, but this first episode gives a strong indication that Pascal is the only main cast member of the show. The episode is riddled with cameos including Brian Posehn, Carl Weathers, and Werner Herzog, but none of these characters feel like they have a reason to come back later on. The focus seems to be primarily on the Mandalorian’s journey as he scavenges from planet-to-planet.
Written by Iron Man director Jon Favreau and directed by Dave Filoni of Clone Wars and Rebels fame, The Mandalorian offers up a completely new view of Star Wars universe. Up until now, nearly all live action portrayals set in this universe have been directly connected to the Skywalker family, whereas in this series they aren’t mentioned once. For that matter, none of the key players in the franchise are, which sets the stage for a whole new playground. In terms of tone, the show takes the form of a more serious western set in space. While it does have its humorous moments, the series does appear to be taking a darker initiative than the mostly lighthearted tone of the films.
With cutting-edge special effects, compelling performances, and spectacular action, The Mandalorian may very well prove to be the best Disney-produced Star Wars content yet! The first episode is streaming now on Disney+.
