No franchise is safe from the influence of a shared universe and Hannah Barbera is once again throwing its hat into the ring with the new animated series Jellystone Premiering this fall on HBO Max. The show involves a giant roster of Hannah Barbera favorites all living and working together in the town of Jellystone, which most fans will know is home to the famous Yogi and Boo Boo Bear.
“It basically started when Warner Bros. came to me and asked if I wanted to play with the Hanna Barbara characters and I said yes of course,” says Executive Producer C.H. Greenblatt. The original plan was to do the show as a series of shorts like Looney Toons but that idea quickly took another direction.
“We started to put them all together and put them into a show that was reminiscent of a show that I would watch when I was young like Laugh Olympics where would see everyone all together. That started to flesh out this whole world and universe where we could put anyone in there,” explains Greenblatt.
The show really does bring in everyone from the Hanna Barbera stable including some deep cuts. Expect to see everyone from Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Top Cat, Snaglepuss and Jabberjaw. It’s a smorgasbord of iconic characters all bouncing into each other on a show that is sure to be bonkers.
The only thing that really doesn’t gel is the animation. Coming from the creator of Chowder the animation style is a lot less stylized than the original looking much closer to Fairly Odd Parents than Scooby-Doo! But different doesn’t always mean bad. Based on the panel alone the show is going to be a ton of fun.
