Netflix’s “All About the Washingtons” Pays Homage to Classic 90’s Sitcoms

On August 10, Netflix is set to premiere All About the Washingtons, a new sitcom from the producer of The Mindy Project and Speechless.

All About The Washingtons is an autobiographical scripted family sitcom that follows Joey Washington (Rev Run aka Joseph Simmons) and his wife Justine Washington (Justine Simmons), playing fictionalized versions of themselves raising a family of kids. After Joey decides to retire from a long career as legendary hip-hop royalty, his wife Justine takes advantage of the opportunity to pursue a career of her own now that Joey is available to focus on raising the kids and keeping the house in order. Their kids are portrayed by rising stars Kiana LedéNathan AndersonLeah Rose Randall and Maceo Smedley

The show’s leads are quite good, with Justine’s spunk and wit providing clever comebacks to Joey’s rationalizations. Starring as the Washington children are Kiana Ledé (Veronica), Nathan Anderson (Wesley), Leah Rose Randall (Skyler), and Maceo Smedley (Deavon). Each of the children are introduced with their own personal dilemmas: Veronica facing boy trouble, Wesley desperately trying to follow in his father’s footsteps as a rapper, Skyler wanting to experience public school as opposed to home schooling, and Deavon trying to explain the complexities of “Bungee Ball” to his father.

The show looks and feels very much like classic sitcoms of the 90s. Most notably The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Family Matters. With today’s climate being benevolently wrapped in nostalgia, it can be safely assumed that this series will follow in the footsteps of those that came before it.
