Marvel’s zombies have been a fan favorite alternate reality since the series first appeared back in 2005 written by none other than The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman. In his hands, the Marvel Universe turned bleak and full of dark, dark satire. So it’s no real surprise the MCU chose to embrace it in the most recent episode of What If…?
While it’s not a direct adaption of the comics it’s pretty damn close and amazing to see the crazy characters come to life. Audiences get a crazy, bleak, and most outrageous world where characters both big and small get to shine.
It’s times like this where Marvel’s casting comes in handy. By putting everyone in a cartoon world it allows them to get far more bonkers than they normally would or could in a movie. So when Paul Rudd shows up as a talking head in a jar making dad jokes it somehow doesn’t feel out of place. It also feels like a genius move on the creator’s part taking advantage of the range that Rudd and the others provide.
That’s not to say that this is a funny episode, it’s not. In fact, it manages to create some pretty creative homages to new and classic horror in ways that still feel organic. While this episode feels much shorter than the others I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’re going to see of the Marvel Zombie universe. It is technically canon within the MCU now so expect some kind of reference to it later. That being said, I’d love to see zombie Cap show up at some point in Doctor Strange 2.
