It’s the year of the sequel for fan-favorite writer/director Kevin Smith! During a panel at yesterday’s annual “Power Con”, Smith, along with his Fatman Beyond co-host Marc Bernardin announces that they were selected personally by Netflix to write and produce an all-new animated sequel series to the 80s cult hit He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
Premiering in 1983, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe followed the story of Adam, a young prince whom with the magical “Power Sword” of Castle Grayskull transforms into “He-Man”, the most powerful warrior in the universe. He-Man is dedicated to protecting the kingdom of Eternia from the villainous Skeletor, Overlord of Evil. Aside from a short-lived animated reboot in 2002, He-Man has spent quite sometime out of the spotlight. Despite this, the original series has maintained its popularity and cult status for more than three decades.
Netflix’s new series, titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation, will build upon the previously established storyline from the original 1983 series. “I’m Eternia-ly grateful to Mattel TV and Netflix for entrusting me with not only the secrets of Grayskull, but also their entire Universe,” said Smith. ““In ‘Revelation,’ we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! Brought to life with the most metal character designs Powerhouse Animation can contain in the frame, this is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!”
Smith will be serving as showrunner and executive producer, while writers include Marc Bernardin (“Fatman Beyond”, “Castle Rock”) Eric Carrasco (“Supergirl”), Tim Sheridan (“Reign of the Supermen”), and Diya Mishra (“Magic the Gathering”). Rob David, President of Mattel Television will also serve as an executive producer.
