Top 5 Blair Witch Fan Theories

Well, it’s spooky season! While the nights are closing in and the chill is beginning to spread. It’s time to draw the blinds, light the candles, and stick your favourite comfort horror movie on!

My favourite (since you asked) comfort horror is 1999’s The Blair Witch Project! It’s a love it or hate it kind of film, and I happen to love it. In the 27 years since this subtle gem was unleashed, fans have come up myriad of theories to explain the events in and around the found footage. Here are the Top 5 Blair Witch Fan Theories!

5. A Murder Plot

Arguably the most discussed theory is that two of the three leads conspired to kill the third. According to this theory Josh and Mike agreed to help Heather shoot her Blair Witch documentary in the woods in order to murder her (and presumably) hide her body there.

In the universe of the film Mike and Heather only meet the morning they set of to the woods to film. It is unclear how close Heather and Josh are but it is assumed they are just classmates. Heather may be viewed as annoying and pretentious by some (I personally like her) but is that worth killing her over? Is it revenge for some perceived slight or for the sick thrill of killing?

Mike and Josh are somewhat cruel to Heather. Brushing her off when she appears to be the only one with at least a passing knowledge of hiking and following maps. They film her peeing and the more lost they get; the crueller they become to her, even after Mike admits to throwing away the map!

Interestingly, as Blair Witch co-creator Dan Myrick told LADbible in 2024; the actress who played Heather (Heather Donahue) brought a knife with her to the shooting of the film. In 1994 (when the film was shot) this was an unknown production company that would be filming for days in isolation in a Maryland forest. A young woman with four strange men just wanted to protect herself. Maybe the fictional Heather should have been less trusting?

4. Heather the Witch

As the antithesis to the first theory; Heather is placed not as a hapless victim but as a burgeoning witch. Is Heather an occultist obsessed with believed to be historical Blair Witch: a 18th century Irish immigrant and possible village wisewoman name of Elly Kedward? In the official The Blaire With Project Website that was constructed for the lore of the film before its release includes passages from Heather’s diary regarding her project. In her diary Heather says she ‘can’t explain the kinship’ she feels towards Elly. Heather also writes about sending energy to Elly and warding off evil spirits. Heather clearly knows a lot about The Blair Witch legend, is the documentary simply a cover to commune with her idol?  In doing this did Heather evoke dark forces she wasn’t prepared to deal with? This theory does add more gravity to the famous scene of a terrified Heather (at the most unflattering angle) apologising to the camera and saying it was “her fault”.

3. Josh is Possessed

Josh has been hailed as the most likable character out of the three. Long haired and chill, at the start of their journey he is the one trying to keep everything light and everyone calm. After the first night camping he even laughs from his sleeping bag that he heard “a definite cackle” from the woods the night before.

Josh’s personality does completely change throughout the course of the film. Now, obviously peoples personalities will change when they are under tremendous stress like being lost in the woods. This was ’94 nobody had cell phones or GPS. Josh becomes cruel, needling Heather with his “That’s your motivation!” speech while pointing a camera in her face until she cries.

Before Josh disappears his belongings (and only his) are strewn over their campsite and covered in some unidentifiable ‘slime’. Was this Josh being marked for possession? Its Josh’s voice yelling “follow my voice!” which leads Heather and Mike to the house of the child serial killer where the fatal final scene takes. Was Josh possessed either by The Blair Witch herself or perhaps the child killer Rustin Parr?

Josh’s possession may also have been foreshadowed Towards the beginning of the film, around their campfire, Josh’s face is centred with the flames. Heather quips: “…the flames are licking you like the devil there Josh.” Josh doesn’t answer with gives the camera a somewhat secretive smile.

2. The Townspeople were in on it

At the start of the film, the trio interview the residents of Burkittsville (formally known as Blair), Maryland, before heading to the woods. Not only are the residents quite knowledgeable about The Blair Witch legend but many are extremely willing to talk on camera. I know it was ’94 before the tech revolution but people weren’t that bored! Were the townspeople deliberately enticing the trio (even more) into the woods to meet their fate. Is this a Wicker Man situation does Elly Kedward need a sacrifice every so often? That toddler did act shifty!

1. They Time Travelled

One theory that is actually backed up by the surrounding Blair Witch lore. Curse of the Blair Witch was a mockumentary created for the SciFi Channel in 1999 centring around the film students disappearance and the Blair Witch legend.

The mockumentary states that the film students reels were found under the foundation of a 100 year old house, yet the soil hadn’t been disturbed. How was this possible when the students disappeared in 1994?

Many fans believe that the three at some point time travelled either back to the time of the child killer Parr (the 1940’s) or maybe even to Elly Kedward’s time (1700’s). This would explain why they can’t find their car again despite following map. The car doesn’t exist yet. It also may explains why they walked for 15 hours and ended up back at the exact same log, despite crossing the river, perhaps they are stuck in some kind of time loop they can’t get out of. They end up in what fans believe to be Rustin Parr’s house in the woods which should not still be standing in Heather’s, Josh’s, and Mike’s original timeline. Was Rustin Parr or Elly Kedward waiting for them in that house?
