Zoinks! Scooby-Doo: Origins Has Wrapped Production

The gang is officially back on the case.

Netflix has announced that production has wrapped on Scooby-Doo: Origins, its upcoming live-action reimagining of the beloved mystery-solving franchise. The series is now heading toward its highly anticipated global debut on Netflix in 2027, bringing Mystery Inc. into a darker, modernized world of secrets, supernatural scares and, of course, one very special Great Dane.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Scooby-Doo: Origins promises to explore the early days of the iconic group while putting a fresh spin on the mythology that has entertained audiences for more than five decades.

Meet the New Mystery-Solving Crew

The series features an impressive ensemble cast, led by Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones.

The cast also includes Paul Walter Hauser, Rusty Schwimmer, Peter Macon, Jona Xiao, Dani Deetté, Elysée Sanvillé, Alex Isles, Avery Kristen Pohl, Pamela Mitchell, Ross Kimball, Sara Gilbert, Wynn Everett, Sauriyan Sapkota, Bruce McGill, André Benjamin and Cathy Moriarty.

But there is one cast member who is particularly historic for the franchise: Scooby-Doo himself.

For the first time in the history of the Scooby-Doo franchise, the famous canine detective will be portrayed by a real Great Dane dog rather than an animated character or digital creation.

That detail alone is enough to make longtime fans raise an eyebrow and ask one very important question: Ruh-roh… is this going to be different?

A New Origin Story for Mystery Inc.

Scooby-Doo: Origins takes audiences back to a time before the group became the legendary Mystery Inc.

The story follows old friends Shaggy and Daphne, who find themselves caught up in a haunting mystery during their final summer at camp. At the center of the mystery is a lonely, lost Great Dane puppy who may have witnessed a supernatural murder.

Their investigation brings them together with Velma, a pragmatic and scientifically minded townie, and Freddy, a strange but undeniably handsome new kid.

As the four begin digging into the case, what initially appears to be a mystery becomes something much more dangerous. Their investigation threatens to drag each of them into a terrifying nightmare while exposing secrets they would rather keep hidden.

The premise suggests that Origins won’t simply recreate familiar Scooby-Doo adventures. Instead, the series appears poised to explore how these very different personalities became the team audiences have known for generations.

A Darker Take on a Pop-Culture Icon

For more than 50 years, Scooby-Doo has remained one of the most recognizable characters in entertainment.

The franchise has expanded from its original animated adventures into three theatrical films, more than a dozen animated television series and nearly 40 animated home entertainment movies.

Now, Netflix is taking the characters into live-action territory once again, but with an origin story designed to put a new spin on the familiar mythology.

With supernatural murder, mysterious secrets and a group of teenagers facing a nightmare that may be bigger than they realize, Scooby-Doo: Origins appears to be aiming for a mystery series that can appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation.

Behind the Mystery

The series comes from Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who serve as showrunners, writers and executive producers through Midnight Radio, the production company behind projects including High Fidelity and Everything Sucks!

Executive producers include Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman through Berlanti Productions and its overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, along with André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner and Adrienne Erickson through Midnight Radio.

Toby Haynes serves as an executive producer and directed Episode 101.

The series is being produced by Warner Bros. Television.

Filming in Atlanta

Scooby-Doo: Origins also joins an impressive collection of Netflix productions filmed in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Atlanta production lineup includes the massive hit Stranger Things, as well as His & Hers and upcoming productions including ‘Tis So Sweet, All the Sinners Bleed, A Different World, Where There’s Smoke and Season 5 of Sweet Magnolias.

With production now officially complete, the next stop for Scooby-Doo: Origins is the editing room before the Mystery Inc. crew finally arrives on Netflix worldwide in 2027.

And if the series delivers on its promise, fans may soon discover that the greatest mystery isn’t who’s behind the mask.
