Zoinks! Scooby-Doo: Origins Begins Filming in Atlanta
Netflix is officially bringing Mystery Inc. back to life, announcing that production has begun in Atlanta, Georgia on its new live-action series, Scooby-Doo: Origins. The series promises a fresh, modern reimagining of the beloved franchise, exploring how the iconic mystery-solving gang first came together.
The previously announced core cast, led by Mckenna Grace as Daphne Blake, alongside Tanner Hagen as Shaggy Rogers, Abby Ryder Fortson as Velma Dinkley, and Maxwell Jenkins as Fred Jones. Paul Walter Hauser is also set to appear in a currently undisclosed role.
According to the official logline, Scooby-Doo: Origins takes place during one fateful summer, where longtime friends Shaggy and Daphne become entangled in a chilling mystery involving a lost Great Dane puppy—one that may have witnessed a supernatural murder.
They soon team up with Velma, described as a pragmatic and scientifically minded local, and Freddy, the enigmatic new arrival, to unravel a case that quickly spirals into something far more sinister. As the mystery deepens, the group finds themselves confronting secrets that threaten to pull them into a nightmare far beyond anything they expected.
The setup suggests a tonal shift for the franchise, leaning into more suspenseful and serialized storytelling while still honoring the DNA that has defined Scooby-Doo for more than five decades.
The series is helmed by Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg, who serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers through their Midnight Radio banner. The duo previously collaborated on series like High Fidelity and Everything Sucks!, bringing a mix of character-driven storytelling and genre sensibilities to the project.
They are joined by an impressive producing team, including Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman for Berlanti Productions, alongside André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Adrienne Erickson for Midnight Radio. Toby Haynes will direct the first episode and also serves as an executive producer.
Few properties have endured quite like Scooby-Doo. For more than 50 years, the franchise has remained a staple of pop culture, spanning theatrical releases, multiple animated series, and dozens of home entertainment films.
With Scooby-Doo: Origins, Netflix is looking to introduce the Mystery Inc. gang to a new generation while offering longtime fans a deeper look at the characters’ beginnings.
The series also continues Netflix’s strong production presence in Atlanta, joining a slate that includes global hits like Stranger Things as well as upcoming projects such as His & Hers, ‘Tis So Sweet, All the Sinners Bleed, A Different World, Where There’s Smoke, and Sweet Magnolias Season 5.
Produced by Warner Bros. Television, one of the industry’s most prolific studios, Scooby-Doo: Origins adds another high-profile title to its already extensive lineup of scripted programming across streaming and broadcast platforms.
