Telling stories about someone’s individual journey in life is always a popular theme in independently made films. Honey Boy is a film adapted from a screenplay by actor Shia LaBeouf, that is based on his own experiences. Alma Har’el (award winning filmmaker from Bombay Beach and Love True) paints a picture of a young actor and his troubled childhood that lead to an equally difficult time in his early adulthood. He is constantly trying to reconcile with his estranged father and deal with his on personal mental health. Cast on this arduous journey are Joah Jupe ( A Quiet Place) and Lucas Hedges (A Boy Erased, Manchester By The Sea). LaBaeouf plays a version of his own father, a grifter and a felon.
This film is an interesting collaboration between someone reliving their own experiences and a filmmaker trying to translate these past memories into beautiful works of art.
Honey Boy will be released in theaters from Amazon Studios November 8, 2019.
