It’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind…but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large.
It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time-stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying tome.
It needs to be said that this was an amazingly accurate portrayal of the stories themselves! Everything from the storylines, to the makeup, to the actual overall cinematography and betrayal of the story was on point!
The first story involving a scarecrow had a wonderfully creepy overtone, but did not take the usual opportunities for jump scares, something which ends up being refreshing after having them in movies for so long. It had a well-thought-out story that actually had you caring about the different characters in the film even to the point where you were yelling at the movie screen for them to make better choices!
The characters each had their own levels in this film as well as their own depths. I found myself caring for each character differently. Some you’re angry towards while others you were feeling sorrow and pity. no matter what was happening in the story though you always felt something for these people which I believe is something that is sorely lacking in most modern films, horror or otherwise.
Which new story came a unique challenge for the main characters involved, each one having to face a new story that was firstly written for them in blood as was told in the very beginning of the film now of course you have to have the catalyst to set everything off so there is the main character who has to open the book set the whole thing going and even though you’re upset with her it’s still is not enough to distract from the story. Speaking of that let’s jump into that element of it.
The story starts out with four friends going to explore the resident townships haunted house. It is said that a child that lives in the house died there but there was a secret to be found, a book. now, within the book, there was supposed to be a number of very scary stories the danger comes in when it’s revealed that the spirit will write new stories if she has been awakened.
Of course, as I mentioned, she does get awaken by the young lady portrayed by Zoe Colletti. of course, all hell breaks loose in the town as the stories began to unfold about her and her friends each one facing a certain level of demise. The makeup of course was absolutely astounding but so was the lighting the directing and just about every element of this film! I highly recommended to all who enjoy a little spookiness in their life!
