The pop culture community is in mourning today as reports have just been released that John Rogers, who had served as President of the San Diego Comic-Con died yesterday of brain cancer.
Geek culture wouldn’t be what it is today without Rogers influence. San Diego Comic Con continues to set the bar on comic conventions and many, including myself, consider it to be a Mecca for the pop culture community. That happened because of Rogers.
Rogers served with SDCC in various capacities for more 30 years watching the industry transform around him. The event, like many around the country in the late 80s and early 90s, was originally quite small and attracted only about 5,000 people a year. Rogers helped transform it into the powerhouse it is today with literally millions in attendance from all over the planet.
His family wishes that fans donate to the American Brain Tumor Association or the American Civil Liberties Union in lieu of flowers.
