Hacksaw Ridge is the true story of one of our greatest heroes of World War II, Desmond Doss. Doss was an American Medic who served during the battle of Okinawa. He believed the war was just, but killing was nevertheless wrong; he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon. He stayed behind at Hawkshaw Ridge after his battalion was ordered to pull back, With explosions going off all around him and Japanese soldiers surrounding him. Doss an army medic, single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. He was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor. Doss worked against all odds day and night to save as many lives as he could.
Overall, Mel Gibson did an excellent job of directing this film and The storyline stayed true to the source material . The only thing that really fell short for me was Andrew Garfield in his portrayal of Desmond Doss. For me, his performance just was not up to par and seemed to be shadowed by his fellow cast members better performances . Other than that Hawkshaw Ridge is still an excellent action packed war flick and well worth the price of admission.
